Grades and forms of beta-alanine powder
Beta-alanine (3-aminopropanoic acid) is a beta-amino acid supplied as a white crystalline powder for food supplements. Manufacturers use it mainly in powders, capsules and tablets. It is not a vitamin or mineral, so its EU use depends on national rules rather than the harmonised supplement lists.
The amino group sits on the terminal carbon, not the carbon next to the carboxyl group. The molecule therefore has no chiral centre. There is no L- or D-form to specify, which keeps purchasing and specification simple compared with most amino acids.
The choice is between physical forms, not chemical forms. A fine crystalline powder suits capsule filling and dry blending with other actives. Where flow, dust or segregation matter, such as on high-speed filling lines or tablet presses, particle size becomes the deciding attribute.
Assay, particle size distribution, loss on drying and contaminant limits appear on the specification sheet. SoleChem sends the specification sheet and the certificate of analysis with its quote. Ask for the grade and particle size you need in the quote form.
EU regulatory status
Directive 2002/46/EC sets harmonised lists only for vitamins and minerals in food supplements. Beta-alanine is not a vitamin or mineral, so it does not appear in Annex I or Annex II. The permitted-forms guide explains how those annexes work.
Use of beta-alanine therefore falls under national rules on “other substances”. These differ between member states. Some require notification of each product, some publish lists or maximum amounts, and others rely on general food law. Check the rules of every target market with its competent authority.
Regulation (EC) No 1925/2006 contains a procedure for restricting or prohibiting other substances, with the outcome recorded in Annex III. Confirm that beta-alanine is not listed there before launch.
Novel-food status under Regulation (EU) 2015/2283 must also be confirmed. Check the Union list of novel foods and the position of your target authorities. The novel food guide sets out the steps.
Labelling follows Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 and the supplement-specific rules of Directive 2002/46/EC; see the labelling guide. Before using any claim, check the EU Register of nutrition and health claims and the health-claims guide.
Formulation notes
Powders. Beta-alanine is readily soluble in water, so it suits ready-to-mix drinks and pre-workout blends. It is often combined with creatine monohydrate, L-citrulline, L-arginine and taurine. Its taste is generally mild, but confirm it in the finished, flavoured blend. The powders guide covers blend uniformity and flow.
Maillard browning. Beta-alanine has a free primary amino group. With reducing sugars, heat and moisture, it can take part in Maillard reactions that brown or discolour a blend. Control moisture and water activity, and include colour in stability trials when the blend contains reducing carbohydrates.
Capsules. The label declares beta-alanine itself, not a salt, so no elemental conversion applies. The mass to dose is the label claim divided by the assay fraction on the certificate of analysis, plus any overage. The overage calculator handles this step.
Label claims in the gram range need several capsules per serving. Fill weight per capsule depends on the bulk density stated on the specification sheet. The capsules guide covers fill volume and capsule size.
Tablets. Run compression trials with the grade you intend to buy, since flow and compaction depend on particle size. Some brands use modified-release tablets with a hydrophilic matrix such as HPMC. Release testing then becomes part of the product specification. The tablets guide covers binders and lubricants.

Questions from buyers
Is beta-alanine the same material as alanine?
No. Both have the formula C3H7NO2, but alanine is an alpha-amino acid with a chiral centre, while beta-alanine carries its amino group on the terminal carbon. They have different CAS numbers and must be specified separately.
Can one beta-alanine formula be sold in every EU member state?
Not automatically. Because beta-alanine is regulated through national rules on other substances, notification duties and any maximum amounts differ by country. Check each target market with its competent authority before launch.
