Grades and forms of hydrolyzed collagen powder

Hydrolyzed collagen, also called collagen peptides or collagen hydrolysate, is collagen broken down by enzymatic hydrolysis into short peptides. It is bought as a water-soluble powder. The choices that matter are source species, peptide size and how the powder disperses. Unlike gelatin, it does not form a gel.

Source Typical raw material Points to check
Bovine Hide, bone Animal-origin documentation and TSE statement on the specification
Porcine Skin Fit with the product’s dietary positioning
Fish Skin, scales Fish allergen labelling, residual marine odour

The material is a mixture of peptides, so the molar mass in the technical-data table is a nominal figure. The specification states an average molecular weight or a molecular-weight distribution instead. More extensive hydrolysis gives smaller peptides, which dissolve more readily but can taste more bitter.

Two physical forms cover most uses. Standard powder suits blending, encapsulation and industrial mixing. Agglomerated (instantised) powder wets and disperses faster, which matters for consumer-mixed drinks. Native or undenatured collagen is a different material with its own specification.

SoleChem sends the specification sheet and certificate of analysis with its quote. State the source species, physical form and peptide profile you need in the quote form.

EU regulatory status

Hydrolyzed collagen is a food ingredient, not a vitamin or mineral. It is therefore not among the substances listed in Annexes I and II of Directive 2002/46/EC. The directive’s definition of food supplements also covers other substances with a nutritional or physiological effect. Rules for those substances are not harmonised at EU level. Some member states apply notification procedures or national lists, so check each target market.

As a product of animal origin, collagen for human consumption is subject to EU food hygiene rules for such products. Expect documentation on raw-material origin and processing as part of the supply chain file.

Collagen hydrolysate from conventional bovine, porcine and fish sources is a long-established food ingredient. Confirm that a given source or process does not fall within Regulation (EU) 2015/2283. The novel food guide explains how to check this.

Fish-derived grades must have fish emphasised as an allergen under Annex II of Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011. See the labelling guide for the wider label requirements. Any nutrition or health claim on the finished product must comply with Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006. Check the EU Register of nutrition and health claims and the health claims guide before drafting label text.

Formulation notes

Powders. Servings are usually declared in grams, so sachets, tubs and ready-to-mix drinks are the main formats. The peptides dissolve in cold water. High-shear mixing can cause foaming, so low-shear reconstitution is easier to control. See ingredients for powders.

Capsules and tablets. A single unit holds only a small part of a gram-level amount, so several units per serving are needed. The powder is hygroscopic, which can affect flow and compression. A flow aid such as silicon dioxide is a common addition. See ingredients for capsules and ingredients for tablets.

Gummies. Hydrolyzed collagen cannot replace the gelling agent. Gelatin or another gelling system is still required, and high collagen loads change texture. See ingredients for gummies.

Stability and handling. Store in sealed packaging away from humidity. With reducing sugars, heat and moisture can cause Maillard browning and off-flavours during processing or storage.

Taste. Bovine and porcine grades are largely neutral. Fish grades can carry a marine note that flavour systems need to mask.

Co-formulation. Hydrolyzed collagen is often combined with hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulfate in products from the joint and connective tissue range.

Label arithmetic. When the label declares hydrolyzed collagen, the declared mass is the ingredient mass, plus any overage you apply. The overage calculator handles that step. If you declare protein, check that the protein content on the certificate of analysis is calculated as Annex I of Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 sets out.

Questions from buyers

What is the difference between hydrolyzed collagen and gelatin?

Both are obtained from collagen. Gelatin is partially hydrolysed and forms a gel in water. Hydrolyzed collagen is hydrolysed further into smaller peptides that dissolve in cold water without gelling.

Can hydrolyzed collagen be used in a plant-based product?

No. It is obtained from animal or fish tissue, so it cannot be positioned as plant-based. Choose the source species to match the product's dietary positioning.

What does the certificate of analysis report for hydrolyzed collagen?

It reports batch results against the parameters on the specification sheet, such as protein content, molecular-weight profile and microbiological limits. Both documents come with the quote.
