MSM grades and forms
MSM (methylsulfonylmethane, also called dimethyl sulfone) is a small organosulfur compound that manufacturers buy as colourless crystals or crystalline powder. The label declares the amount of MSM itself, with no elemental conversion. Its use in EU food supplements depends on national rules, not on the vitamin and mineral lists of Directive 2002/46/EC.
Commercial MSM grades differ mainly in particle size and flow behaviour. Coarse crystals are typical for bulk powder products, where appearance and low dust matter. Finer MSM powder suits capsule filling and blends that need fast dissolution. Granulated grades are intended for tableting, where flow and compressibility decide the choice.
The specification sheet states the assay, particle size distribution and impurity limits for each grade. SoleChem supplies MSM in bulk for manufacturing and sends the specification sheet and certificate of analysis with its quote. Ask for the grade you need in the quote form.
EU regulatory status
Annex I of Directive 2002/46/EC lists the vitamins and minerals allowed in food supplements. Sulfur is not among the listed minerals, and MSM is not a listed form in Annex II. MSM is therefore a substance other than a vitamin or mineral, which the directive leaves to national law.
National rules for these substances differ by member state. Some keep positive lists or set conditions of use, others assess products case by case. Article 10 of the directive also lets member states require notification, with a model of the label, when a supplement is placed on their market. Check with the competent authority of each target country.
Novel food status under Regulation (EU) 2015/2283 depends on whether a food was consumed to a significant degree in the EU before 15 May 1997. The status of MSM in food supplements must be checked before launch, including the Union list of novel foods. The novel food guide explains how to do this.
Any claim on the label falls under Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006. Check the EU Register of nutrition and health claims and the health-claims guide before writing label copy. Article 8 of Directive 2002/46/EC requires the amount of the substance per daily portion in numerical form; see the labelling guide.
Formulation notes
The sulfone group is chemically unreactive under normal processing conditions. MSM is therefore compatible with most supplement actives and excipients. Confirm this with stability testing of the finished product.
MSM dissolves readily in water and has a bitter taste. In drink powders and chewables, plan for flavour masking. In powders it blends well with water-soluble actives such as hydrolyzed collagen.
MSM is often formulated at high amounts per serving. In capsules, fill weight and bulk density decide capsule size and count per serving. Both HPMC and gelatin shells are used. Fine grades may need a flow aid such as silicon dioxide.
In tablets, granulated grades give better flow than fine crystals. A filler such as dicalcium phosphate can improve compaction at lower MSM loadings. MSM melts at a lower temperature than many tablet excipients. Check the melting point on the specification sheet before setting granulation drying temperatures.
MSM is commonly combined with other joint and connective tissue materials such as chondroitin sulfate and hyaluronic acid. These pairings raise no known chemical incompatibility. Watch total fill volume and tablet mass instead.
For label-claim arithmetic, the MSM per unit equals the declared amount divided by the units per serving. Correct that figure for the assay on the certificate of analysis and for any overage. The overage calculator does this step.

Questions from buyers
Is MSM the same substance as dimethyl sulfone?
Yes. Methylsulfonylmethane and dimethyl sulfone are two names for the same compound, CAS 67-71-0. Use the name required by your target market's labelling rules on the ingredient list.
Can MSM be declared as a source of sulfur on the label?
Sulfur is not among the minerals listed in Annex I of Directive 2002/46/EC, so the directive's requirement to express amounts as a percentage of reference values does not apply to it. The label declares the quantity of MSM per daily portion instead.
What does the certificate of analysis for MSM cover?
It reports the results for the lot supplied against the parameters on the specification sheet. SoleChem sends both documents with the quote, so you can compare them with your incoming-goods specification.
